Wouldn’t it be nice if we could grow Rapunzel’s long locks overnight, or just a little faster? Sorcery or science, we’re here to separate the hair growth fairy tales from the facts.
The Myth - Split Ends And Cutting
Split ends usually only show a sign of unhealthy hair but they have nothing to do with the rate of your hair growth. If you’re cutting the hair frequently, it serves only to keep the hair in good condition but does not make it grow faster.
The Good Stuff - Feed The Hair From Within
Vitamin-packed food ensures your hair grows strong and remains healthy. Look for Vitamin A as it keeps it shiny, vitamin B2, B5, B6 and B7 prevent dehydration, regulate production of sebum and keep hair supple while vitamins C and E stimulate the circulation of the scalp.
The Bad Stuff – Shampoos, Hair Clips, Salt & Stress
Shampoos with silicone are a huge no-no. They dry the hair out and can cause breakage. The same goes for hair clips or hair ties that are worn in the same spot over and over. Salt and chlorine are another two enemies of healthy hair. They soften the hair and then they become dry again, in combination with a harsh sun it can destroy the hair further. Stress causes a chemical reaction in your body that can affect the health of your hair too.
Three Steps To Stimulate Your Hair To Grow
1. Two-Minute Pre-shower Rub
Stimulate your hair to grow by rubbing and scrubbing your scalp regularly. New hair has trouble sprouting from under the dirt, oil and old skin cells. Use a scalp brush or the pads of your fingers and rub your scalp for 2 minutes.
2. Moisture Pamper
Opt for a shampoo and conditioner containing avocado oil or shea butter. They keep the hair saturated and prevent the hair becoming brittle.
3. Styling Break
Heat and friction are bad news for healthy hair, damaging the hair cuticles and allowing the hair to snap off too easy. Arm yourself with the right tools, like a wide-tooth comb for detangling and heat-protecting styling products. Give your hair a day-off once a week and let it dry naturally, embracing their natural texture.
