Fighting the frizz may seem sometimes like a battle between good and evil, it’s never-ending. Fortunately for us all, there are ways to keep the frizz at bay. Learn the ‘dos’ and ‘donts’ right here.

	  Don’t Shampoo Too Frequently

The cleanser, sodium lauryl sulphate is a very effective ingredient of most shampoos but it can dry out the hair with frequent shampooing. If you need to wash your hair often, use a sulphate-free shampoo.

	  Do Include Conditioner

A conditioner adds moisture and shine. Make sure you always include it in your hair washing routine. Depending on your hair, use either a deep conditioning hair treatment or something more suitable should you have very fine hair.

	  Don’t Towel-Dry Roughly

Despite the urge to get the excess water out of washed hair fast, avoid rubbing the hair with a towel in a rough way. You can disturb the hair’s cuticles with too much friction and cause it to frizz up. Instead, gently press and squeeze out the water with a softer microfiber cloth.

Do Pick The Correct Styling Product

Look out for products that work best for your type of hair before blow-drying or even if you let your hair dry naturally. Anti-frizz serums work well with straight or wavy hair and creamy formulas are perfect for curly hair. Avoid alcohol as an ingredient as it sucks the moisture out of hair.

	  Do Blow-Dry Like A Pro

	  1. Use an ionic blow-dryer.

	  2. Blow-dry on medium heat instead of a very hot one.

	  3. Use a quality hairbrush made of nylon or boar bristles.

	  4. Keep pointing the nozzle of the blow-dryer downwards, sealing in the hair cuticles.

	  5. Finish with a blast of cold air.

Ke$ha’s fabulously multi-toned, layered locks in pastel colours have definitely grabbed our attention this week. Copy her style with our DIY Ombre and Dip-Dye Hair Guide.

To Bleach Or Not To Bleach?

This only matters if you are a brunette or have raven hair colour. If you don’t want to commit to bleached hair, buy some blonde or light-coloured hair extensions with clips and dip-dye them instead, using pre-cut tinfoil pieces and an application brush. If you are a dark-haired brunette and opt for a bleach option, you might need two bleach sessions to achieve a white shade. Keep at least two months between the bleach sessions to protect the condition of your hair.

How To Get Pastel Hair Tones?

Mix a little bit of the bright hair dye in a plastic bowl with a generous amount of hair conditioner and then apply to hair. This will achieve the desired pastel effect.

How To Achieve Blended Dip Dye and Ombre Hair?
To avoid block-colours look where the hair dye colours can look a bit disconnected, first gently backcomb sections of your hair. Then apply the bleach and hair dye with an application brush or rub them in with your fingers. Once the hair strands are combed through, all the colours will blend well together.

	  Which Dip Dye Colours?
Ke$ha proves that pastel multi-tones look much cooler than the brighter variety of hair dyes. She went all out blending softer shades of lime green, darker green, baby pink, orange-pink, baby blue and navy blue and the combination works. Blues and greens, together with purples generally last longer than reds and pinks after washing your hair.

How To Protect Your Dip-Dye Tresses?

Make a hair mask and hair oil your new best friends. Treat your hair to a hair mask twice a week and always use heat protection when blow-drying. Blow-dry your hair on a lower temperature setting and give it a cold blast in the final stage of blow-drying.

Top Tip : Stay away from hairspray if you dye your hair in bright colours. Stronger hairsprays cling to the hair dye in your hair and lift it out quicker.

Want to know how to make sure your skin remains radiant even through the gruelling winter months? We share some expert advice to banish dull skin.

	  What Makes Your Skin Dull?

When the dead skin cells pile up, they diffuse light and make the skin look lighter. The older we get, the slower the skin cells turnover.

	  How To Keep Radiant Skin?

One word: Exfoliate. The smoother the complexion the more light it reflects, with glowing results.

	  When To Exfoliate?

Make exfoliating your regular evening beauty routine with a gentle daily scrub product. Deeper exfoliation should be done once a week with a product containing microbeads to work the skin a little harder.

	  Which Exfoliator Is For Me?

If you have normal, oily or combination skin, seek products containing salicylic acid, which cleans clogged pores. If you have dry skin, it may be prone to irritation, which leads to more dryness and spots. Search for a gentler type of exfoliator, infused with lactic acid and exfoliate just once a week.

	  What To Do After Exfoliation?

Moisturise! Your skin has natural enzymes that slough away dead cells but if your skin is dry, the process becomes inefficient. Cue moisturisers with ceramides that protect your skin’s natural moisture shield and with vitamin C that brightens the skin with its antioxidant powers.

Top Tip: Need extra help to achieve the celebrity glow? Fake it with a highlighter! Pick a flattering shade (pink, rosy, champagne or yellow tones) for your skin tone and apply sparingly. Blend the creamy or liquid formula with your fingers to the centre of the forehead, top of the cheekbones, chin and tip of your nose.

It doesn’t get any glossier than Salma’s hair and we love the 70’s inspired flicks and volume. See how you can achieve it too! Ombre dip-dye is optional.

	  1. Always start with squeaky clean hair to achieve maximum glossiness and volume. Wash the hair with the correct shampoo for your hair type.

	  2. Gently towel-dry your hair to take any excess moisture out.

	  3. Apply a serum or cream for frizzy/curly hair or a volume mousse/thickening spravy for fine hair to achieve a glossy result with added volume.

	  4. Divide your hair into a minimum of four manageable sections. Use a large round hairbrush that will help you style each separate section properly.

	  5. Blow-dry your hair with the nozzle facing down the hair shaft to eliminate frizz. Hold the round hairbrush vertically and keep twisting it away from your face to encourage the front of the hair to start turning in the style of 70’s flicks around your face.

	  6. For extra volume, curl your dry hair all the way around the brush and blast the hair with cool air before removing the brush.

	  7. To boost the shine, add a little serum that you rub into your palms first, or a smoothing cream.

Top tip : If the outwards flicks around your face and the bottom need more encouragement, you can use your straightener and gently pull and flick the bottom hair strands in the desired direction.

By Zuzana Ritchie, Beauty Writer and Make-Up Artist

Velcro rollers, heated rollers, curling tongs and wands should ensure that we get the best curling results without visiting a salon. But do we? Often we face a struggle to make them last. We look at the possible saboteurs of long lasting curls and fix this problem for good!

Curls Rule no. 1: Use A Hair Product!

When you want your hair to do something it doesn't naturally do, you need to encourage it to do so with the right products. When using a hot tool, you'll need to apply a heat protectant prior to styling. Then follow up with a holding product. If your hair has a natural wave, a curl-enhancing mousse provides hold and staying power. But if you have straight hair, you'll need something with more impact, like a curl activating mousse.

Curls Rule no. 2: Clip Your Curls To Set!

When using a curling wand, we often make the mistake of not clipping each curl to the head until it cools down. As a result, the curls may drop very quickly , especially if you have fine hair or very heavy, long and thick hair. For long lasting curls for any type of hair, clip each coil to your head right after you curl it. Speed things up with the cool setting button on your hair dryer and blast the pinned curls until they’re cold when you touch them. Long-lasting curls are guaranteed!

Curls Rule no. 3: Change The State Of Your Hair!

If your hair is not naturally curly you need to ‘change the state of the hair’. This means from wet to dry hair or hot to cold. A wet set will always last the longest as the hair drys into shape. Wash and towel-dry your hair, add a holding product, then create the curls with velcro rollers or bendy rollers. For a hot to cold technique use hot rollers, curling tongs or a heated hair styling tool.

Curls Rule no. 4: Update To A Curl-Friendly Haircut!

Sometimes sticking to all the above might not be enough. Your haircut itself may be weighing down the curls if you were blessed with thick, long but heavy hair. Get your stylist to cut some layers in to encourage the hair to bounce. If you can bear to have your hair a few inches shorter, get an even trim all around, to take the weight off.
